Steak ‘n Shake has officially transitioned all its Steakburgers to 100% grass-fed and grass-finished beef starting June 1, 2026. The nationwide change applies across the chain’s approximately 350 locations, making it the first major American burger chain to adopt this standard companywide. The beef comes from pasture-raised cattle with no added hormones or antibiotics, eliminating processed fillers and aligning with the brand’s commitment to cleaner, higher-quality ingredients.

This upgrade highlights growing consumer demand for more nutritious options. Grass-fed and grass-finished beef is often richer in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) compared to conventional grain-finished beef. Early customer testing reportedly showed a strong preference for the new taste, which many describe as more flavorful and nutrient-dense. The switch follows other recent improvements at the chain, including cooking fries in beef tallow, using real Wisconsin butter, and sweetening drinks with cane sugar.

The decision ties into the broader “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) initiative, supported by the chain’s Chief MAHA Officer. While supporters celebrate the healthier profile and transparency, some observers question sourcing details—whether it relies on domestic U.S. ranchers or imports. Despite potential supply challenges, Steak ‘n Shake has maintained reasonable pricing on its popular combos. This bold step positions the iconic brand as a leader in elevating fast-food standards.
