Putin Hosts ASEAN Leaders in Kazan as Russia Seeks New Alliances

Russian President Vladimir Putin is hosting a two-day Russia-ASEAN summit in Kazan, bringing together leaders from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, East Timor, and Vietnam. The summit aims to expand Russia’s “strategic partnership” with the Southeast Asian bloc amid its ongoing international isolation over the war in Ukraine.

Russia is seeking to boost trade, energy cooperation, and diplomatic ties with ASEAN members as Western sanctions continue to pressure its economy. For several ASEAN nations, the summit represents an opportunity to engage without fully aligning with either Western or Russian geopolitical blocs — a balancing act that has defined much of the region’s foreign policy in recent years.

Analysts say the summit reflects Russia’s broader “pivot to Asia” strategy, aimed at reducing its dependence on Western markets and cementing new economic partnerships across the Global South.
