Russia carried out a large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine over the weekend, killing five rescue workers in Kharkiv and wounding at least 20 people in the capital Kyiv. Multiple apartment buildings were set ablaze, and a fire broke out at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra — also known as the Monastery of Caves — one of Ukraine’s most historically significant religious landmarks, dating back over a thousand years.
The attack drew immediate international condemnation. Ukrainian officials described it as one of the most intense strikes in recent months, targeting both civilian infrastructure and cultural heritage simultaneously. Emergency services worked through the night to contain fires and search for survivors.
The strikes come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire, casting further doubt on the prospects for a near-term resolution to the conflict.
