The Bible does not explicitly describe any major biblical figure as homosexual. However, one of the most discussed relationships among modern scholars is the bond between David and Jonathan. Their friendship is described with unusual emotional language, leading some researchers to propose that it may have been romantic, while traditional interpretations view it as a profound friendship and political alliance.
Several passages are often cited. In 1 Samuel 18:1, it says that “the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.” Later, in 2 Samuel 1:26, David mourns Jonathan’s death and says: “Your love to me was wonderful, surpassing the love of women.” Supporters of the romantic theory argue that these expressions resemble language associated with intimate relationships. Critics respond that such wording was common in ancient Near Eastern descriptions of loyalty, covenant, and brotherhood.
There is no scholarly consensus. Traditional Jewish and Christian interpretations understand David and Jonathan as close friends whose relationship was based on mutual trust, military cooperation, and a sacred covenant. Modern scholars who explore queer readings of biblical texts argue that ancient authors may have intentionally portrayed their bond with emotional depth that modern readers can interpret in different ways. However, there is no explicit statement in the Bible describing them as lovers.
The Bible also contains passages that have traditionally been interpreted as condemning same-sex sexual relations. One of the most frequently cited texts is Leviticus 18:22: “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.” Another often cited passage is Romans 1:26–27, where the Apostle Paul describes same-sex relations as contrary to nature. The interpretation and application of these verses remain debated among religious communities and modern scholars.
Because of these differences, it is important to distinguish between historical evidence, modern academic theories, and religious doctrine. The Bible never explicitly states that David and Jonathan were involved in a homosexual romance. Their relationship remains one of the most debated and speculative subjects in biblical studies.
