Iran has warned it could stop its World Cup 2026 games if fans bring LGBT+ flags or chant slogans against the national team. The statement came from Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali, reported by local media and Reuters.
The main concern is Iran’s match against Egypt on June 27 in Seattle. The game falls during the city’s Pride weekend and has been locally called the “Pride Match.” Both Iran and Egypt had already asked FIFA to prevent any related displays.
Donyamali said coach Amir Ghalenoei will be required to halt the game if “unofficial materials” appear. He claimed FIFA assured him there would be no incidents at Lumen Field.
Both countries maintain strict laws against homosexuality. In December 2025, the football federations of Iran and Egypt formally protested the scheduling in Seattle. Local organizers replied that the Pride celebration is part of the city’s identity and not aimed at any specific country.
The threat adds to ongoing controversies surrounding national teams at the tournament in the United States.
